Kanji Segawa Shares his Magic with Met!

Updated: Apr 30

Kanji danced professionally with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre for 12 years, dazzling audiences in the US and around the world. Kanji also worked extensively with Mark Morris, including as principal dancer in “Nixon in China,” at the Metropolitan Opera. Since 1999, Kanji has been Creative Associate for Jessica Lang, mounting new ballets for American Ballet Theatre, Washington Ballet, The Royal Ballet and many more. Kanji has choreographed seven dances for Metropolitan Ballet Company and our dancers love when he comes to cast and rehearse these works.

Kanji took his final bow on the Ailey stage in December 2023 and was recently appointed as Ailey’s Rehearsal Director. With Ailey performing at Philadelphia’s Academy of Music on February 24, Kanji invited Met’s Director, Lisa Collins Vidnovic, to lead Company class prior to the matinee performance. Lisa was thrilled to see Kanji, and the dancers, especially Patrick Coker and Samantha Figgins, both of whom have served as faculty for Metropolitan’s Summer Intensive. These special artistic relationships are part of “What makes Met, Met!”
