Serving a diverse community audience of more than 10,000 people annually, MBC is committed to ensuring that dance continues to be relevant, exciting and accessible for people of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds. The Company performs traditional full-length works, embraces contemporary work and encourages the creation of new ballets as well as the development of emerging choreographers.
The Family Concert Series, with its strong literary component, fosters an early interest in dance. Variations/Collaborations with Settlement Music School presents an innovative fusion of live art forms. The Student Showcase with our parent school, Metropolitan Ballet Academy, exposes students and families to a company performance, serving to inspire further study
Featuring five performances each November designed to introduce dance to young audiences, the Family Concert Series provides the opportunity to engage with dance through both popular and timeless children’s literature, as told through a broad range of dance forms and styles that entertain and enrich audience members of all ages. The programs often include collaborations with respected professionals in the field, such as Robin Preiss Glasser, a former professional dancer now children’s illustrator, best known for her Fancy Nancy series of children’s picture books. Our highly anticipated “Special Family Concert Event”, MBC’s extraordinary, “over-the-top” autumn Tea Party for families and children, compliments the theme of each Series, and commences our community’s annual holiday season.
Metropolitan Students have numerous opportunities to audition for several different productions of the beloved winter season tale of The Nutcracker. Our students have appeared with Pennsylvania Ballet’s George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker at the Academy of Music, Wilmington Ballet Academy of the Dance The Nutcracker at the DuPont Theatre, and Moscow Ballet’s The Nutcracker at the Annenberg Center.
Since 2001, MBC has presented its annual March/April collaboration with Settlement Music School—an innovative fusion of live art forms and contemporary dance commissions/premieres that highlights the talents of our young dance and musical artists in the beautiful Kurtz Center of the William Penn Charter School.
Our annual Spring Showcase in June serves to inspire further study and celebrates the accomplishments of our students and company in four high-quality performances.
